Its Practice for a Reason – Witch in the 'Burbs

Its Practice for a Reason

A blog reader emailed me a few months ago and said

My magic isn’t getting any results and I have no idea why. I’ve tried everything on this one particular purpose, but I just can’t seem to get anything going. Can you help me?

My answer may seem a little harsh, but it is the nature of our reality. You can’t get good at drawing unless you practice. You can’t get good at writing unless you practice. You can’t get good at painting unless you practice. Notice that we use the phrase, “magical practice,” a lot. Why? Because its work – it takes effort – you have to practice it to get good at it.

There are times a magical practice isn’t easy. But you do the practice anyhow. There are times you don’t feel like making an offering, or don’t feel like sitting for an hour in front of an altar meditating, or casting a circle to do full ritual. But you do it anyhow. Why? Because: practice.

The modern world is not very conducive to magic. I mean real magic – the kind where you might make a few seemingly meaningless gestures and the neighborhood bully disappears from your life forever. Or you might write a chant and speak it aloud repeatedly and you get an unforeseen snowstorm cropping up on the horizon.

Before you get angry with me, let’s be honest with ourselves. Real magic – the magic of making interesting things happen in our lives by seemingly supernatural means – is far from dead and still very do-able. But our modern world distracts us from the reality that magic is not only possible, but very probable.

The modern world distracts us through entertainment. We sit in front of the television and watch movies like The Craft, Hocus Pocus and Practical Magic. Don’t get me wrong – I love these shows and movies. What self-proclaimed Witch in his/her right mind can live without a little Fairuza Balk, Bette Midler or Stockard Channing in their lives? But society then proceeds to tell us that this kind of magic can’t happen – that these kinds of results are not probable, let alone possible. But I’m here to tell you that, with a little ingenuity, you can attract the man of your dreams, curse your most hateful enemies and escape the dreaded claws of that nasty witch-bitch down the street. No, you won’t get thunder and lightning from a cauldron or cause hundreds of great white sharks to beach themselves. But you can get some amazing fucking results.

The modern world psychologizes everything. As a field of experimental study, psychology began circa 1879 in Germany by one of its foremost fathers, Wilhelm Wundt. Since then, it’s has had its uphill battles, for sure. But the shit-storm is that psychology tells us spirits don’t exist, that our fantasies are just daydreams and that fairies are figments of our imaginations. It tells us a lot of other bullshit, too. Yes, there’s a difference between paranoid schizophrenia and spirit communication. In the former, people hear disembodied voices that tell them to throw shoes at their innocent neighbor – or worse, stab them to death. In the latter, people hear whispers that speak of the balance of nature and sometimes request a specific offering for work completed. There are distinctions between mental/emotional disorders and spirit contact, and if you – ahem – practice long enough, you know the difference.

The modern world keeps us distracted by keeping us busy. We’re humans. Most of us have to tend to our jobs or careers at least 8 hours a day. Some of us have to do that at night. And then we have to sleep, cook for the family, spend quality time with loved ones. Some of us have to entertain children every day without strangling them. The point is: we all have lives. But the more connected you are to Cyberville, the more distracted you are from Mother Nature. And I’m here to tell you: the more in tune with Nature you are, the more likely you are to get the manifested results of good, strategic, put-together magical workings. Its necessary to be in touch with (and know) yourself on the inside. It’s rare that a person who does magic is able to get good results without doing the inner work necessary to grow spiritually. All of the worlds distractions lend very easily to keeping us out of touch with Nature and our Inner Beans Beings. But it is precisely this kind of being in-touch with Nature and oneself that lends real, tangible, unavoidable power to your magical works.

There are a few small changes we can make in our daily lives to bring better magical results. One of those is creating or adopting a daily practice. I don’t just sit around and type all day, as much as I might want to and it moves me towards a goal. And I don’t get to watch those movies repeatedly that I mentioned above, even if I want to regularly. And I don’t always get to just read my favorite blogs. I have a daily practice that keeps me in touch with Nature and my Divine Self. Without that, I couldn’t get my magic to work, either. But I get decent results and, I’m sure, with an adjustment to your daily practice, you can start getting them, too.

That blog-reader, by the way? After committing to making a few changes in her daily schedule and really getting down to practicing the nitty-gritty of what makes magic work – she’s already seeing some real changes as a result of manifested spellwork.
